Barbara Brabec, widow of Harry J. Brabec Back issues of big band and jazz periodicals from Harry Brabec's collection.

Private Sale of Big Band/Jazz
Magazine & Newsletter Collections

My husband saved everything—he was a genuine pack rat—and he kept what he saved as neat and clean as possible. As he did with his books, he never marked or cut up his magazines, newsletters, or other publications. Just filed them away or stacked them neatly on shelves and left me to figure out what to do with them after he was gone. Below are several collections of periodicals that need a new home. Grab them while you can. I don't think you'll find these back issues anywhere else on the Web. - Barbara

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

U. S. BUYERS ONLY.  PAYMENT BY PAYPAL IS REQUIRED.

No returns will be accepted, nor refunds issued, as it is assumed that buyers know what they will be getting, based on earlier familiarity or from my clear descriptions. In all cases, the first email responder will have dibs on that item.

The email address in each section is coded with a subject line related to that group of back issues or calendars. To order, click that email link (the subject line will be filled in for you) and send me your full name, address and phone number, specifying your choice of shipment (media mail, priority mail, or UPS). Unless a postage-paid price is indicated, I'll calculate the total of your order with shipment by standard (media) mail and then issue a PayPal invoice for total amount. (Sorry, I can't determine shipping cost in advance of actually packing the items for shipping and weighing the package, but media mail is very inexpensive.) I'll ship within one or two business days after payment has been received. If you have any questions prior to ordering, email me here.

Sample back issues of THE BIG BANDS magazine,
no longer in publication. From Harry Brabec's collection.

THE BIG BANDS: 33 Issues, $65 (plus shipping by media mail).
Includes Special Souvenir Issue (see below)

#JBP-1. THE BIG BANDS magazine has been out of publication for several years, but I have 34 issues, all clean and unmarked, dating from December 1977 into 1984 (which I suspect was the last year of publication).

8 issues in 7" x 10" format, 28 pages, from Dec. 1977 to Sept. 1979
26 issues in 8-1/2 x 11" format, 40 pages, from Nov. 1979 to Vol. 6 #3 1984.

There are some gaps in this collection. One issue said issues were published every six weeks, but it's hard to tell since some issues were dated with a month and year while others were given a volume and issue number later on. This magazine was obviously a labor of love, and a rather amateurish publication as self-published magazines go. None of the issues bear a copyright notice, and all of the articles were typed on a typewriter, many in CAPS. But the content is solid, and this magazine certainly kept my husband's interest over the years or he wouldn't have continued his subscription to it. Issues were printed on good white stock with covers of varying colors.

collectible souvenir issue The Big Bands magazine, Foto Play

BONUS ISSUE: The Big Bands: "Foto Play" – Special Souvenir Issue, Deluxe Edition

This sold for $20 when published. Saddle-stitched, 64 pages. The issue bears no publication date, but the magazine was launched in 1977, and I found a reference on the Web that indicates this souvenir issue was published sometime in 1984. I don’t think there's another copy of it available anywhere. The introduction by editor Sandy Beck describes the issue as "a foto-play of the musicians and singers who created the big band era, with some of the outstanding performers of the day, continuing that tradition of great music." Printed on glossy stock, this issue has little text beyond the Introduction and editor's notes; mostly this is page after page of interesting (and probably rare) photographs. This issue will be included as a bonus when you buy the set of back issues described above.

Back issues of Joslyn's Jazz Journal

JOSLYN’S JAZZ JOURNAL, 58 issues Vol. 13 #2 - Vol. 28 #4

Joslyn’s Jazz Journal ceased publication in the past year or so. Because Harry also left me with some 1500 Big Band and Jazz LPs (which I will eventually be offering for sale), I kept this publication going to the end, but didn't save those issue after clipping them. This periodical, published by Gene Joslin, was dedicated to the glory of record collecting, with every issue featuring collector and dealer wants, classified ads, and feature articles and columns on recording artists and other news and information for record collectors. The issues always came folded, as shown in the illustration above. I am offering this publication in two groups:

#JBP-2. 20 Issues published between 1982 - 1987, $10 (plus shipping by media mail). Prior to 1990, this publication was a quarterly printed on newsprint paper that is very toned now (per sample in above illustration), but still quite readable. The main value of these older issues, perhaps, would be to jazz historians and those with LP collections who would like to read the feature articles and columns in each issue.

#JBP-3. 39 Issues published between 1990 - 2004. $75 (plus shipping by media mail). Sometime after 1987 (Harry’s collection stopped there, then picked up again later), Joslin switched to a 28-page quarterly printed on quality white paper with a subscription price of first $20, then $26/year. I have 39 of these issues dating from November 1990 (Vol. 9 #4) to 2004. All are bright and clean, unmarked, in excellent condition. Each includes feature articles, columns, photographs shared by readers, and more.

                          on above issue.)
Vol. 18, #4 (features Clarence Hall)
Vol. 19, #1 & #3 (features Bill Evans & Nat Gonella--pictured above)
Vol. 21, #4 (features Ziggy Elman)
Vol. 24, #1 & #3 (features James Moody/Chano Pozp/Dizzy Gillespie & Todd Rhodes)
Vol. 25 #4 (features Bill Love)
Vol. 27, #4 (features Harold S. Kaye)
Vol. 28, #1 (features . . . a mess of musicians, whose names appear on the cover above)

To order, email me with Volume and Issue numbers desired.

Attention New IAJRC subscribers:

#JBP-5. 46 Back Issues that IAJRC is selling for $6 each --Yours for $4 each, plus shipping by media mail.

I am NOT interested in selling these separately, but I will consider breaking it in half, or by thirds as my goal is to get these issues into appreciative hands with a reasonable return to me. This collection begins with Vol. 14 and runs through Vol. 28, and all issues are in like-new condition. (Note that from this collection I have pulled the out-of-print issues listed above, so if you want them, too, you should order them separately.) Again, you can visit the IAJRC website for more information on all these back issues.

Back Issues of The Mississippi Rag, Voice of Traditional Jazz and Ragtime

THE MISSISSIPPI RAG – Voice of Traditional Jazz and Ragtime
109 issues from January 1974 to 1988, $99, plus shipping

#JBP-7. For 33 years (November 1973-October 2006), The Mississippi Rag was a printed tabloid publication, presenting exclusive feature stories by top writers on contemporary and legendary giants of traditional jazz and ragtime, plus stories on less well known but accomplished musicians. Now it’s a classy free online monthly.

But I have something no one else seems to have: 109 issues published from January 1974 to 1988 that are absolutely filled with fascinating historical information any jazz or ragtime enthusiast would love! Of course the issues are very toned because of the paper they were printed on, but they are intact, unmarked, and quite readable.
