This boxed set of 12 CDs was produced in 1990 on the occasion of the Chicago Symphony’s centennial. These recordings represent the finest moments of the CSO through the years, and I know Harry bought this set more for nostalgia’s sake than anything else because his playing was included on two of those CDs, and because he also owned the original LP recordings of those performances. On Disk 4, he was playing triangle, gong and chimes in Pictures At An Exhibition, recorded in 1951 when he was principal percussionist with the Symphony. On Disk 9, his snare drum playing can be heard in the 1966 performance of Benny Goodman playing Chicago with Morton Gould conducting.
The set includes forty-nine performances by twenty conductors, with a running time of nearly fourteen hours. The Symphony still sells this collection for $195 (plus shipping), and had a listing on Amazon the last time I checked. The set is packaged in a hard case that includes a 48-page booklet. |
